THE DISTRICT

This safe Republican district covers a largely rural area west of Green Bay, including parts of Oconto, Menominee, Shawano, Outagamie and Brown counties.

THE NUTSHELL

Sen. Robert Cowles, R-Green Bay, currently represents the 2nd Senate District but plans to retire rather than seek reelection, ending what is currently the longest incumbent term in the Wisconsin Legislature. Sen. Eric Wimberger, R-Green Bay, is running for the seat after redistricting moved him from the 30th Senate District, which he currently represents, to the more rural 2nd Senate District. In statements on his campaign website, Wimberger said he would support regulatory reforms relating to “eliminating burdensome red tape” and that he wanted to lower tax costs for businesses. Wimberger also said that he would focus on improving road conditions in northeast Wisconsin, support PFAS cleanup and to “stop SEL and DEI in Schools,” acronyms that refer to Social and Emotional Learning and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Kelly Peterson, a De Pere resident and former broadcast journalist with CBS 5 in Green Bay, will be running as a Democrat. In her April campaign announcement, Peterson spoke out against Republican efforts to restrict abortion. Peterson is also campaigning on issues of child care affordability, farming and PFAS contamination.

PRIMARY RESULTS

Both Wimberger and Peterson advanced without an opponent.
