THE DISTRICT
Bordering the northwestern edge of Lake Winnebago, this Fox Valley district covers urban centers across Appleton, Neenah and Oshkosh. It is a Democratic-leaning seat.
THE NUTSHELL
Kristi Alfheim, currently an Appleton Common Council alderperson, will be running as a Democrat. Alfheim is pursuing a Senate seat for the second time after losing to Rachael Cabral-Guevara, R-Appleton, in the 19th Senate District in 2022. Now redistricted into the 18th Senate District, Alfheim is campaigning on women’s rights, education and health care, according to an interview. Two candidates, Blong Yang and Anthony Phillips, will compete for the Republican nomination. Yang, an Appleton resident and restaurant owner, is the first Laotian-American to run for state office as a Republican in Wisconsin. Yang called himself a “constitutional conservative” and said in an interview that he would want to cut taxes and government spending. He also supports increased limits on abortion, expanding school vouchers and expanding policing. Phillips, an Appleton resident and cancer physician, indicated in a statement on his campaign website that he is against abortion, supports “cutting taxes and red tape” for businesses and wants to spend on road and transportation infrastructure.
PRIMARY RESULTS
Phillips defeated Yang by a comfortable margin and will face Alfheim who didn’t have a primary opponent.
