THE DISTRICT

This Democratic-leaning toss-up district stretches from the Madison area north and west to encompass Portage, Wisconsin Dells, Baraboo, Reedsburg and Richland Center.

THE NUTSHELL

State Sen. Joan Ballweg, R-Markesan, is moving into this Democratic-leaning toss-up district to run for a second term in the state Senate. Ballweg, who serves as majority caucus vice chair, was drawn into the 13th Senate District under the state’s new voting maps, pairing her with Sen. John Jagler, R-Watertown. To avoid an incumbent-on-incumbent matchup in two years, she opted to move into the new 14th Senate District. Ballweg chairs the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Tourism. During the most recent legislative session, she broke with her Republican colleagues and voted against legislation that would have banned transgender girls from playing on girls sports teams at public and voucher schools. Democratic candidate Sarah Keyeski, of Lodi, is a mental health counselor who grew up on a dairy farm. She’s campaigning on boosting public school funding and lifting revenue limits, bolstering access to abortion care, IVF and birth control and investing in broadband expansion in rural parts of the state.

PRIMARY RESULTS

Both Ballweg and Keyeski advanced without an opponent.
