Explore the Center’s complete coverage of Wisconsin’s frac sand rush, including stories, maps, data and multimedia.

Wisconsin’s frac sand boom may have slowed, but the number of permitted and proposed facilities still has grown since the Center’s May tally.

That update found 131 frac sand facilities in Wisconsin. Of those, 112 were permitted and the remaining 19 were still in the proposal stages.

The current update, produced by reporter Alison Dirr, includes 141 mines, processing plants or rail load-outs.
