THE DISTRICT

The 71st Assembly District encompasses Stevens Point and stretches southward, including portions of Portage and Adams counties. It is bordered by Wood County to the west and Waupaca County to the east. The district leans Democratic.

THE NUTSHELL

Long-time Rep. Katrina Shankland opted to run for Congress, though lost in the Democratic primary. Vinnie Miresse, a Portage County Board member and owner of a residential remodeling business, faces Bob Pahmeier, a former Federal Bureau of Prisons correctional officer. Miresse is campaigning on increasing bipartisan cooperation in the Capitol, investing in public schools and protecting abortion rights. Pahmeier is campaigning on building affordable housing, bolstering small businesses and family farms and promoting parental involvement in education. Miresse is favored to win in the Democratic-leaning district.

PRIMARY RESULTS

Both Miresse and Pahmeier advanced without an opponent.
