I’m a current WIC participant in Madison. Frankly, it’s embarrassing to use the checks. They’re time consuming to ring up and I hear grunts and moans from the customers in line behind me and the cashiers. I’ve even gotten attitude from store managers before. I’ve heard remarks about how I must be poor and uneducated, from store staff speaking with each other. However, I have a masters degree in education. My husband has a doctorate. I’m currently a stay at home mom to my two girls (10 months and 3 years) since my job was eliminated. My husband is a medical resident. Without the WIC checks we would not have enough food to get through the month. I wish it was important to the state to address the stigma.
